About the Author

Abdul Jalil Shakur was born in the Republic of Guyana, the only English-speaking country in South
America. He grew up in his native village of Meten Meer Zorg, situated on the west coast of Demerara. He
holds a Hon. B.Sc. degree from the Universities of Guyana and Atabasca (Canada), as well as a B.Ed. from
the University of Toronto. He is a Canadian trained science teacher.

Jalil acquired a wealth of experience as a teacher of integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry and
Physics, having taught these subjects to high school students during his 43-year illustrious, successful
teaching career. He was a high school teacher at the Zeeburg Secondary School (Guyana) from 1974-1978
and from 1982-1989. He taught Physics at St. Mary’s College in St. Lucia from 1989 until 1991 when he
migrated to Canada. During those times he served as the Head of the Science Department at the Zeeburg
Secondary School, and as Chemistry examiner with the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC). In
Canada, he was employed by Toronto District School Board where he taught integrated Science, Biology,
Chemistry at the C.W. Jefferys C.I. from 1997 until he retired in 2017.

Jalil lives in Toronto with his wife, Lilatool, his daughters Shazeeda, Nazeera, Nafeesa, (teachers with the
Toronto District School Board) and son, Dr. Yaseer, and twelve wonderful grandchildren.
Jalil is a sport-loving person, who enjoys socializing with people and is a strong advocate for
the oppressed, poor and needy.
