About the Book:

Eddy Edwards is a lifeguard.

He fights to save lives.

A pacifist at heart, Eddy has a habit of fighting for what he believes is right-no matter what the cost. When he protests a teacher’s unfair grading practice, the fallout forces him to change schools from a suburb of Chicago to an experimental co-operative farm in rural Michigan.

When the draft board comes calling in 1944, Eddy once again stands up for what he believes in. He embarks on a quest to become and remain a Conscientious Objector. He travels across the United States, always looking over his shoulder as the draft board chases him through two wars in an effort to force him to bear arms. Following his conscience, Eddy serves in the Civilian Public Service and the U.S. Forest Service, building camps and community, searching for a better way to serve his country while remaining true to himself and his beliefs.
