Review
Between an elusive villain, a rival captain looking to claim the top prize, and a secret weapon that may change the fishing tournament scene for good, Boyd C Hipp II returns to the Island of Bimini in the Mahalo Memories Sequel, Eva. The story begins with the titular character, Eva, trapped in a precarious situation and is left with an ultimatum from Slayder, a man the Mahalo crew must save her from. The crew, led by Calhoun Hipps, is successful in saving Eva, however, Slayder gets away, starting the cat and mouse game between him and the Bimini police force. From there, is where we get to the main plot of this story, which is character growth for Eva, the romance between her and Calhoun Hipps, and the looming fishing tournament.
Eva is the character that receives the most attention in this novel. Not only with her ever-evolving relationship with Calhoun, her friendship with Bones, and the mentor-student relationship with Hank, but with her skills as the reigning and defending female angler champion of the Mahalo, and her humanitarian efforts on Bimini, which lead to the creation of the Every Vessel Assists Program or “EVA.”
While Eva is at the forefront of character development, Hank, Bones, and Calhoun also share the spotlight as a great supporting cast to Eva. While the story starts with the illegal smuggling plotline, it does take a backseat to the Eva and Calhoun romance and the fishing tournament. But the ending comes with a twist that sets the scene for a potential sequel.
This book might be hard to follow without reading Mahalo Memories first, as it resumes from the ending of the first book. I would also recommend reading Mahalo Memories.
Eva is a fast and worthwhile read for both romantics and fishing enthusiasts alike. An enjoyable read and a recommendation for me. ★★★★ ½ – Elijah B. (Explore Authors Magazine)
