In the young adult/ fantasy novella, The Chronicles of Moretti by Samira Shirazi, a family learns about their magical powers and the danger they face from an evil wizard. After Emma Moretti’s fun birthday party, the Moretti family encounters a huge dragon. Earlier, Emma had begun having strange symptoms which the dragon explains. As the family learns about their ancestry and the powers they possess, they have to rely on the dragon for training and protection. Their lives take another turn when Emma’s mother suddenly disappears. Distraught by his father’s indifference to her disappearance, Emma’s brother, Victor, goes looking for her. Meanwhile, the family learns more about her disappearance and the evil wizard’s hand in it.
I loved the initial surprises within The Chronicles of Moretti such as the sudden appearance of the dragon and Victoria’s disappearance. The story also includes an absorbing background of the Moretti family and their powers. Though its main concept of good versus evil is familiar, the plot includes twists and has an unexpected ending. The book also contains a fascinating storyline that describes the danger the family faces and what they could do to sidestep the evil wizard’s schemes. However, much of the story is told through explanations and details. There are few action scenes to liven up the plot. The Chronicles of Moretti by Samira Shirazi contains an interesting storyline and a surprising ending.
