Review:
“If a genie offered you a second chance at life, would you take it?”
It sounds like a simple question. Many believe the past is set in stone and would refuse the offer, choosing to play the hand they were dealt. For others, the answer is different. Given the opportunity to rectify personal, romantic, or financial failings, they would leap at the chance, regardless of the danger.
Charlie Baker was a down-on-his-luck loser drowning in regrets. A chaotic miscreant with a knack for finding trouble, Charlie skated through life by letting those around him absorb the collateral damage. This selfish lifestyle ultimately leaves him alone on a beach with nothing but a broken watch. But when his dream spirals into a literal dead-end nightmare, a mysterious stranger offers him a lifeline: a doorway to another world, and a shot at becoming something greater.
Chinese-American author Ling Ma once wrote, “A second chance doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. In many ways, it is the more difficult thing. Because a second chance means that you have to try harder. You must rise to the challenge without the blind optimism of ignorance.”
In James Chamberlain’s One Chance, readers will see Charlie, now Chance Arizona, get that second chance, but the new question that arises from this is: can he earn it?
Fantasy and sci-fi are arguably the most challenging genres to master. Creators must build entirely new worlds from scratch—complete with distinct lore, laws, and magic systems—while avoiding well-worn tropes. Chamberlain succeeds brilliantly, making his world stand out within the fantasy genre and its Isekai subgenre. The worldbuilding is superb, and the magic system feels seamlessly integrated and entirely natural.
Crucially, the world of Wisteria feels genuinely alive. In many popular fantasy settings, like Elden Ring, for instance, it is hard to imagine how everyday citizens actually survive. Wisteria never suffers from this problem. Whether they are central to the plot or just passing through, the background civilians add a rich texture and realism that beautifully grounds Chamberlain’s setting.
While Chance Arizona serves as our protagonist and audience surrogate, the narrative is ultimately an ensemble piece. The story is split between Chance, Periwinkle Everbloom, a boy targeted by the fearsome Crimson Blade; and Marigold Lonestar, a mysterious blind girl accompanied by her falcon familiar.
The chemistry among this central trio works well, and Chamberlain juggles their distinct, relatable arcs with impressive skill. Their friendship remains rock-solid despite a chaotic introduction and numerous hardships. These obstacles also allow the romance between Chance and Marigold to develop with realistic pacing.
The main and supporting characters feel authentic and relatable. A credit to Chamberlain’s strong writing, especially in how he juggles multiple characters with distinct, relatable story arcs.
The character progression is excellent across the board, but Chance’s journey is the standout. From the outset, Chance is a man in flux. He desperately wants to be better than the man Charlie was, yet dire situations frequently tempt him to slide backward into his old, miscreant habits. Even as he grows braver and takes accountability, he must constantly battle his inner demons to do the right thing.
This internal conflict is the novel’s greatest strength. It proves that promising to change with a fresh start is easy, but living up to that promise is a brutal fight. When Chance does succeed, his internal victories feel far more rewarding than his external ones.
The action scenes were done very well. They were engaging, easy to follow, and didn’t get over-descriptive. The plot itself is solid, featuring twists and turns that will leave the reader engaged to the very end.
From its compelling characters and thoughtful worldbuilding to its tight plot, One Chance impresses on every level. It delivers a satisfying, conclusive ending while leaving the door just far enough open for Chamberlain to return to this world. It earns a magical recommendation from me. ★★★★★ – Elijah B.
