Review
“I believe in the profession of journalism. I believe that the public journal is a public trust; that all connected with it are, to the full measure of their responsibility, trustees for the public; that acceptance of a lesser service than the public service is betrayal of this trust.”
This is the personal and professional affirmation and code of journalism ethics written by Walter Williams in 1914. The creed has been published in more than 100 languages for journalists worldwide to follow.
But while upholding this ethical code is simple in free societies. it proved dangerous for the obstinate, prideful protagonist, Maks Prifti, of Shefqet Meko’s historical political thriller, Albanian Downfall.
In 1987, just two years before the Revolutions of 1989, also known as the Fall of Communism, those under the authoritarian communist country of Albania were still in a free fall against their controlling government.
As a journalist, Maks was honor-bound by this creed, but in the end, he faced certain danger in upholding his ideals against this dangerous regime. Shefqet Meko, author of Saga Across the Atlantic, returns in this historical fiction political thriller, Albanian Downfall, to ask the question: Do you stay true to yourself and your morals, or do you compromise yourself for survival?
While most political thrillers rely on standard American backdrops and their political games, Albanian Downfall offers a refreshing change of pace by immersing readers in the tense political atmosphere of 1980s Albania.
Albanian Downfall does a great job setting the tone and pace that will endure for the entire novel. The entire book feels like a perpetual slow burn, ramping up the tension with every new turn of the page without losing steam until the final payoff, which is a credit to Meko’s strong style of writing.
What works in this story’s favor is strong characterization
When readers begin their journey, they are met with the protagonist, Maks Prifti, in the middle of a crisis of faith. We see Maks questioning his identity as a proud supporter of the party despite seeing the reality of the party in that it is, in his words, “A tangled web of nepotism, choking everything in its grasp.”
We see the honor of the man clashing with the party’s ideals, leaving Maks with thoughts filled with paranoia, regrets, and fear of exclusion. Unfortunately, this comes true as the one oasis in his life, his wonderful fiancee, Ema, is forced to separate from him due to the power held by her father-in-law, a member of the party, despite his pleading.
But with this loss, Maks vows to resist and fight while leaving for Tiranë, the capital of Albania.
While it seems that Maks resolves his crisis of faith in the first chapter and comes out on the other side, we see him mentally struggle to untangle himself from the party, which makes him a deeply compelling protagonist.
The supporting cast is equally complex. Figures like Maks’ estranged fiancee, Ema, State Security operative Miço Delvina, old friend Roza Kukuja, and professor-turned-resistance-fighter Ram Kastrati all possess distinct, internally consistent voices, demonstrating Meko’s skill as a storyteller.
The story’s strength is characterization and character growth, action, and tension throughout, with twists and turns that keep the reader invested.
The writing is great. Meko depicts the lead, supporting characters, and the world they inhabit vividly, painting scenes in multiple timelines without veering too much into purple prose or being overly descriptive.
With exceptional writing, an intriguing plot, a complex cast, and a heartbreaking but conclusive ending, Albanian Downfall is a standout addition to the genre and earns a recommendation from me. ★★★★★ – Elijah B. (Explore Authors Magazine)
